Read Write Spell Workbooks and Games
Read Write Spell is a phonics - based series of programmes to improve students' reading, writing and spelling. Teachers, tutors, assistants and parents find them to be user-friendly and very effective. Programmes are available to suit the literacy needs of students with chronological ages ranging from six years to adult. It is especially useful for students whose auditory perception is weak or whose phonic knowledge is poor. In addition it is useful for students who have an incomplete knowledge of the English spelling rules. Unlike many other phonics programmes, it includes all three vital elements - reading, handwriting and spelling - with every new learning objective. At present, there are Read Write Spell programmes for students with reading and spelling ages ranging from 6 years 4 months to 8 years 11 months, with further programmes in preparation. All series follow the same
Read Write Spell phonic progression
, but at a different pace. Students may move to a faster-paced programme as they progress or stay on the same programme until they have completed all workbooks and games in that series.
Choosing the right programme for a student
Note the lower of a student’s reading and spelling ages if you know them. If you don't, ask your student's school to tell you or do a simple single word reading test and a simple spelling test, marking on a record sheet the student's responses. IMPORTANT: This information is only used to determine which series of lessons is needed. I strongly advise against disclosing "reading age" and "spelling age" to students. It is fine to say how many words were correct (raw score) and to explain that if they work on a phonics-based literacy programme they will get a higher score next time. Your aim is to encourage, not to discourage. All series follow the same phonic progression, but the pace varies. The first ten lessons of series 8 are a contraction of the material in the 30 lessons of Series 7. Series 7 is for students whose reading or spelling ages (use the lower score) are between 6 years 4 months and 7 years 3 months at the start of the course. Series 7a is for students whose reading or spelling ages (use the lower score) are between 7 years 4 months and 7 years 11 months at the start of the course. Games from Series 7 are used with 7a (list included with 7a masters). After the 30 lessons of Series 7 or all 15 lessons of Series 7a, students progress to Series 8, lesson 11. Series 8 is for students whose reading or spelling ages (use the lower score) are between 8 years 0 months and 8 years 11 months at the start of the course. Series 9 (in preparation) is for students whose reading or spelling ages (use the lower score) are between 9 years 0 months and 9 years 11 months at the beginning of the course. Progression to a higher series is possible for some students. Details of possible transitions are found in the User Guide that is included with each set of masters. Scores from recent tests including WRAT 4 and other tests can determine a student’s programme. Use the lower of a student’s reading and spelling scores. Certificates of achievement, record card masters, and information pages for users are included.
The photocopiable workbooks
Each Read Write Spell student workbook contains approximately 16 carefully structured activities, which reinforce and add to skills already learned. This is a multisensory phonics programme - the student hears, sees, speaks, touches and writes. Instructions for the tutor are included within the workbooks. Listening activities (to improve phonological awareness) and many different word level and sentence level activities are presented in an attractive way. All workbooks and games are presented in Sassoon font, suitably spaced and sized, and are followed by a literacy game. Most students complete a workbook and a game in 50 to 70 minutes, but it is fine to split this into several sittings if required.Photocopiable masters for student workbooks are supplied in an easy-to-copy loose leaf format. Attractive labelled display books are available for easy storage of sets of ten or fifteen photocopiable workbook masters. Useful information about literacy difficulties and possible transition to a faster series, student record cards, certificates of achievement and a glossary of terms are also included.
The re-usable games
For use after completion of each workbook, there is a literacy game for two, prepared ready to play, with full rules of the game. Ring binders, clearly labelled so that you can instantly find the correct game are available for each set of ten games. The games can be played with an adult or child.
How many lessons are needed?
The number of lessons that individual students require varies. Programmes may be discontinued at any time. Many students discontinue Read Write Spell lessons when their reading and spelling ages have risen to approximately their chronological age.
